Rainbow Star Spectroscope

Star spectra are separated into seven MAJOR classes, OBAFGKMLT. The star spectra on this page are shown within this order.

Class

Surface Temperature

Spectral Characteristics Examples

Regulus
Spectrum B7

This spectra is overlaid with the hydrogen lines from the spectrum of Regulus;
the two 'O' lines are from oxygen in the earth's atmosphere.
The same lines can be picked out on most of the spectra.
Once you have picked out the hydrogen lines the spectra can be calibrated and the other elements showing as marks in the spectrum determined.
