Solarscope

I tried to get one of these cardboard telescopes for the Venus Transit in June 2004 but there were none available.

I purchased the cheapest, standard version: there are two larger versions - one built of cardboard and the top version of wood.

This cardboard telescope, available at Astrofest 2005 for £30.00, is a useful tool for those queuing for my H-alpha Maxscope solar telescope or for small groups interested in viewing sunspots, transits or eclipses.

The device comes as a flat pack, it is a simple, 15 minute task to assemble - the only telescope I have ever made!

The cardboard base and projection telescope box are well cut and assemble well. The primary lens is screwed into the orange tube which in turn is assembled through the main front wall. A convex mirror is assembled into a metal holder on the rear wall.

The solar image is produced in the cardboard box after reflection from the convex mirror. The mirror is mounted in a metal screw-thread mounting on the low, rear wall. This thread gives adjustment for focus.

A good image of the sun is seen with sunspots clearly visible.

The top assembly of the Solarscope rocks easily for elevation, the complete unit is moved by the base to follow the sun across the sky.
