Major Sunspots (0652) - 23rd July 2004

A large sunspot system was seen on the Sun in mid-July 2004. The following images were taken through the Maxscope 40 using a Canon G1 Digital camera  mounted on a 26mm eyepiece with a Scopetronix Digi-T adaptor.

I am still trying to understand how to capture and process the Ha images.

The images were processed using Paint Shop Pro 8.

Meade LPI Imager

I have used a Meade LPI imager with my Coronado H-alpha Maxscope 40 telescope.

The image of the Sun just fits the Meade LPI imager and first images through very hazy cloud cover look reasonable and worthy of some more effort on a clear day. The image has had to be compressed to get to an acceptable size for distribution over the web - be assured that the solar prominences on the original image are very good.

Calcium K Images

Christmas 2006 brought a Coronado CaK PST. I had seen a demonstration CaK PST at a BAA meeting and suspected that I (male 66 years) would not be able to see the image visually and would use the PST with digital imaging.

I have since found that most males over 60 cannot see the Sun visually through the telescope but that females in their 60s can! I know that males below 20 can see the image visually.

First image through the PST using hand-held Canon Ixus 850 digital camera.

January 25th 2007.

Images of Sun taken with Canon Ixus 850 in both H-alpha and CaK on a day with no activity on the Sun - it is the time of minimum Solar activity.

White Light Images

This image taken using my home-built AstroCam. Early attempt at sunspot imaging.

Large Sunspot Complex: 29 v 2003

On 26th May 2003 and subsequent days, a large sunspot complex developed which covered over 1.2 billion sq km of the sun's suface. The two images below show the whole sun image taken with Canon G1 digital camera and a more detailed image of the sunspot complex with my AstroCam. Major X-class solar flares and coronal mass ejections, CMEs, were ejected from the complex and headed earthwards.

This sun event happened on the days before an annular eclipse of the sun on 31st May 2003.

Sun Animation

This animation was made from a sequence of daily images of the Sun made whilst I was on holiday in Arizona in September/October 2004

The animation shows the rotation of the sun moving the sunspots across the face of the sun together with the development of the sunspots over time.

Images captured with Canon D10 1/125sec @ f8 (ASA 100)
EF zoom at 210mm lens with 2x teleconvertor (equivalent 670mm)
+ white light solar filter
